1. TAKE A PROFESSIONAL-LOOKING HEADSHOT (AND USE IT ON ALL OF YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNTS).
If you want to make connections online (and potentially get your screenplay noticed by industry leaders), that blurry iPhone photo of your dog isn’t going to cut it as a profile picture. To stand out online, use a simple headshot with a plain background where your face is clearly visible. You should also be the only person in the photo – you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see your social media page and have no clue which of the three people in your photo you are. Have a friend or professional photographer take a few photos of you in natural light, and crop your best picture to the right proportions before uploading it to Facebook, Twitter, or other social media pages.
2. MAKE YOUR SOCIAL ACCOUNTS PUBLIC.
Setting your social media account to “private” means you have control over who sees what you post – but it ALSO means that potentially great screenwriting contacts don’t have the chance to see your content and learn about your screenplay. Set your accounts to “public” (or create a separate public account just for your screenwriting) so that you’re easily discoverable and have a better chance of being noticed by others in the industry.
3. JOIN AN ONLINE SCREENWRITING COMMUNITY.
Facebook groups, Twitter chats, and other online communities are great ways to connect with fellow screenwriters. Find support when you’re struggling with a particular scene, learn from people who are a few steps ahead of you, and offer advice to screenwriters just starting out. ScriptChat, the Stage 32 Lounge, and SimplyScripts are a few great places to start!
